Tattooing my Mom

1/21/2013

First of all, my mother is SO beautiful. Yup- it's true.

And I don't just say that for the brownie points. You see, my mom and I have been through a similar journey in life. We grew up in a house of 5 males. We were totally out numbered! In time, we have learned to embrace our femininity. To really understand it, embrace it, and be a woman with the highest of integrity. I watch her constantly flow through the ups and downs of life with patience and perseverance. Barely flinching.

This last tattoo I did for my mom, was actually her third one (she makes me count it this way and it makes me smile~ she counts 1 tattoo per eye, since she has upper eyeliner!) since I have started my practice. She has always been so supportive of the choices that I make, and always so nurturing to my creativity and whatever it is that comes of it. This particular tattoo was so special for me. My mom and I have bellydanced together for a couple years now~ & this particular tattoo was created to symbolize a traditional henna tattoo, which is often seen gracing the bodies of bellydancers everywhere. Henna is a very common temporary art form in India, used to adorn the female figure in times of celebration.

Tattooing my mom was very special to me. I knew this was unlike anything she had ever done before, (or even thought she would ever do!), and she went into it with a trust and gusto like no other! I love the idea of being with her always. This tattoo will serve as a reminder of our journey together, and how amazing it is to have been blessed with such an amazing family.

Om Sweet Om

Many years before opening my tattoo studio in Midland MI, I started becoming very interested in shapes & symbols, & the personal as well as collective meanings that humans have assigned to them. I was particularly drawn to Sanskrit, an ancient language that is rare to hear spoken, but very revered to this day in sacred spiritual and yogic texts. OM is one Sanskrit word that held a particular significance to me, & I know of many others who feel the same.  It's simplicity combined with it's elegant flow, lured me in like a lost sailor by a Siren at sea. It brought together meaning that I had not yet had the chance to comprehend. And once again, a meaning that was so condensed, yet infinitely evasive.

To say the word, OM, is said to create the sound of the entire universe - the way you would hear it if it was happening from one ear listening to it all. It is the sound of unity, of one. Perhaps this is the logic to why chanting this syllable is so powerful - for it's ability to bring harmony to all aspects within yourself.

None the less, I have found it a huge honor to have created the OM on the floor of The Yoga Place, as  well as the logo for BreezYoga here, both in Midland. The fact that this keeps coming up for me is extremely special. I have shared the images here as a way to keep track of my blessings. I loved doing these, and I hope you enjoy the pics as well:) The result of both of these happened from being with really amazing people at the time. They were not created by myself soley, as I was deeply inspired and supported by a whole crew of yogi's at The Yoga Place, who helped me brainstorm how to get this massive piece centered - (as well as to paint in all the black! What a beautiful job they did! Without that black , the white would be nothing......), and my loving family with the BreezYoga design. I guess it is just the nature of the OM~To show that nothing exists solely.

lots of love & peace,
xx Alana

Easy Yoga Pose For Less Stress & More Joy

Half spinal twist is an amazing pose to help realign the entire body and to help loosen the spine. Which means YOU will be feeling less stress, and more joy!
Picture
It’s an especially great pose for women to keep the reproductive and urinary organs healthy and in great working order. Twists in general are detoxifying and this one in particular increases the circulation to the pelvic region; providing fresh blood, nutrients and oxygen. It’s a bit tricky to try this in a meeting, though easy to do if you have a private office and need a short break to realign your body and mind. It works well at home before you go to bed to help the spine and hips relax and release before bed.

Benefits of Half Spinal Twist

•                Increases the elasticity of the spine
•                Stretches the muscles on the side of the body
•                Relieves back pain and stiffness from in between the vertebrae.
•                Useful for slipped discs
•                Massages the abdominal organs and increases the digestive juices making it useful for loss of appetite and constipation.
•                Useful for diabetics, with concentration on the pancreas.
•                Opens the chest and increases the oxygen supply to the lungs.
•                Loosens the hip joints, relieving stiffness.
•                Releases tension in the arms, shoulders, upper back and neck.
•                Increases purification of the blood as well as the internal organs.
•                Improves round shoulders.

What Does it mean to Love Yourself?

1/20/2013

Self-compassion is a willingness to look at your own mistakes & shortcomings with kindness & understanding ~ it’s embracing the fact that to err is indeed human.
Loving yourself does not mean vanity, self-centeredness, or egotistical actions. When we really take a moment to feel love for ourselves, this is more of a serperation of ego and spirit, than it is engaging the ego.

For anyone who is not familiar with the concept of ego, it is simply the neurological personality - it is what you identify with in this life. It is your strengths, your weaknesses, your dreams, your fears. It is the the way you react to events because of your history. It is the voice in most of our heads, telling us what to do and how to do it and evaluating each & every experience that we encounter.

PHEW. That kind of perspective gets tiring.

I used to believe that my ego was my worst enemy. I had a hard time living with it, and did a lot in order to suppress it's voice. I learned in time that my ego was my friend, as long as I was consistently staying in touch with my heart, and taking the time each day to nurture that essential part of my nature.

It is all about striking a balance. Ignoring your heart is no way to live- and at the same time, denying your ego is no way to live, either. I have learned that each of these aspects can live harmoniously in balance, when we are willing to really look at ourselves, our  values, and what we aspire to be in this world. There is so much more to you than the battle that we often feel inside.

♥ She is doing her best, she is trying. She has been given this life & she is taking it day by day. Maybe she has made mistakes, maybe she has hurt some people on the way. Maybe she has been hurt. But you know what? She is getting there. ♥

I promise that with practice and willingness, it gets easier and easier to love yourself. And I can't argue with Lucille Ball when she says - When you love yourself first, everything else falls into line. Everything...

New Year. . .New You . . .

1/2/2013

Every year at this time, we get the opportunity as a collective to really start fresh. It is a time of letting go of what no longer serves us as individuals, and ultimately as whole, so that we may step into the wiser, more joyful, life-living people that we really are. This week is a perfect week to take some time out to ask yourself~ What am I willing to release that no longer is serving my happiness? & Let it go :) It is all good. A new year really is a new you (& a new us!) Cheers to that ~ Let's make it best ever. ♥

Tattoo Love

I was just recently informed by my studio's health inspector that I am free to do full scale body tattoos! D R E A M.

For those of you who don't know, I have just been focusing on permanent cosmetics in my business, but have been eager to break my boundries. I can hardly wait. I have a strong vision, and I can't wait to share it with you all over the upcoming months!

To celebrate, I just ordered SkinCandy Ink & I can hardly wait to play! The inks are all organic, vegan & so gorgeous I could eat them!

Since traditional tattooing is somewhat of a different feel than permanent cosmetics, it is just a matter of time & **practice** before I am proficient enough to tattoo YOU. (*wink*) :)
